Having the three points is all that matters, whether we played well or not – Black Stars Coach, CK Akonnor replies critics » GhBase•com™

Coach of the Black Stars, CK Akonnor has said although his players failed to play champagne football in their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday, he is glad they took the three points.

According to him, the Ethiopians posed a huge threat to the team thus they needed to be more concerned about scoring and picking the point than to play to thrill fans.

Ghanaians were not happy with the performance of the Black Stars yesterday when they faced the Ethiopians. It had to take the sheer luck of a 40-yard Mubarak Wakaso screamer which was poorly dealt with by the opponent’s goalkeeper for the team to win.

Reacting to all that, CK Akonnor said his preoccupation is how to steer the team to victory and qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup…winning matches and picking vital points.

“We knew our opponents very well. We know they are a team that possesses the ball a lot and we are aware of their threats. Yes, I know we were not as exciting as the fans would want but they also possessed the ball without being a danger to us. They posed no threat to us during the game”. Akonnor started.

“What was important was that anytime we had the chance to attack, we did that. Even though we were not clinical enough to score more goals”. He added.

“We were not worried when they were possessing the ball but what we were concerned about was our inability to be clinical upfront. We also lost possession a few times in the midfield as well but the most important thing is that we won and we have the three points and that is all that matters”

Ghana will now travel to South Africa for the World Cup qualifiers’ second group game.
